New research findings from Casey Family Programs

ICWA Research
Measuring Compliance with the Indian Child Welfare Act. This brief was developed as a resource for states that seek to document compliance with the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA).

Improving compliance

Available research, though limited, indicates inconsistent and varying degrees of state compliance with ICWA requirements and sanctions. To address these potential shortcomings, the Department of the Interior has proposed new regulations that would ensure more consistent ICWA implementation in all states — ultimately improving outcomes for American Indian children.

Placement Patterns
Placement Patterns for American Indian Children Involved with Child Welfare. This research brief examines the extent to which the placement patterns of American Indian children in out-of-home care are aligned with the placement preference provisions outlined in ICWA.
